Recommended: Anthology (Electric Light Orchestra Part II & The Orchestra)

#1,625: Our friends over at Renaissance Records have been especially busy this year when it comes to ELO Part II releases hence the news that another reissue is imminent should come as no surprise to many ELO (and related artistes) fans, followers and collectors.

Having already issued both of ELO Part II's studio albums ("Electric Light Orchestra Part Two", "Moment of Truth") in 2021 as well as Kelly Groucutt's excellent solo offering "Kelly" beforehand, the US label is putting out a new refresh of Anthology: Electric Light Orchestra Part II & The Orchestra (2CD) from Sunday 21st November. Originally sold during their 2009 UK tour featuring both studio and live recordings by ELO Part II and The Orchestra (former members of ELO & ELO Part II) of selected ELO/Part II/Orchestra songs, the 35 trax have been repackaged and (in part) remastered and produced by Eric Troyer for what is a somewhat belated official release.
Anthology now (2021) and Anthology then (2009)
Anthology: Electric Light Orchestra Part II & The Orchestra is priced at $22.99 and can be ordered via this link thus:

Caught Live (7): Stand Up & Rock! @ Shrewsbury 04/10/21

Photo anonymously donated by Christian Evans with apologies to Andy Bennett & Phil Tree!

#1,623: Believe me now, Yours Truly KJS/ELOBF was not planning to review the Stand Up & Rock! show at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury last night (Monday 4th October) but I soon changed my mind following an evening of high jinks and top quality entertainment as Jasper Carrott, Bev Bevan, his revamped band and an inspired new set list that ensured rapturous applause from the full house.

Whilst comedy legend Jasper was as funny as ever in delivering his observational humour, it was the tightness of Bev's classy musical ensemble that stood out to this writer. Having seen The Move/ELO founder impress recently in Quill alongside Lee Evans and Abby Brant, it was good to see Phil Tree in good form with former Ocean Colour Scenist Andy Bennett showcasing his talents with an exemplary performance. Aside from ace interpretations of five Move & ELO classics, the quintet delivered a storming set of interpretations of tunes by the likes of Bread, The Rolling Stones (dedicated to Charlie Watts), Black Sabbath, Elvis, The Beatles (Come Together was sublime), Marvin Gaye, The Spencer Davis Group and (of course) Ocean Colour Scene. Truly, Stand Up & Rock! remains a production not to be missed. Go see it!

Review: 4000 Miles To Eden (Bubble Gum Orchestra)

#1,622: Judging by the content of their thirteenth studio album "4000 Miles To Eden", the musical juggernaut that is Michael Laine Hildebrandt and his Bubble Gum Orchestra vehicle is showing no sign of slowing down a decade since their stunning debut with "Out Of This World" with their latest release as Yours Truly KJS/ELOBF also celebrate 10 years of our friendship with MLHBGO.

"4000 Miles To Eden" is the second BGO album of 2021 and, much like its predecessor "Angel Dreams", takes the listener on a journey exploring the positive worldview of MLH as one encounters his familiar and often invigorating Bubble Gum tunes of love, gratitude and hope riding on a wave of layered vocals and multi-instrumental musings. Starting with the veneer of classic synth on show with opener "Rock Rock Rock Me" there seems to be more prominent evidence of Mike's bass prowess and guitar craft - as ably demonstrate on "I Love Us", "To Be Forever" and "Lullaby". As with all BGO records, there's instant enjoyable vibe with hints of strings across all twelve trax whether they be rock, ballad, disco or perfect pop - as is the case with classic ELO. This is another most agreeable MLH/Bubble Gum Orchestra opus! KJS/ELOBF faves: "To Be Forever", "Long Distance Voyager", "Sunday Afternoon With You", "Our Secret Until Now". ★★★★★

Recommended: Top of the Pops: The Lost Years Rediscovered 1964-1975 (Peter Checksfield)

#1,621: It was indeed a pleasure to have both author, music historian and photographer Peter Checksfield and The Move/ELO co-founder Bev Bevan kindly touch base with Yours Truly KJS/ELOBF earlier this week regarding the recent publication of Pete's tenth book entitled: "TOP OF THE POPS: The Lost Years Rediscovered 1964-1975" (ISBN 979-8485520502) on Monday 27th September.

You may recall that ELOBF also endorsed Pete's 2019 excellent "Look Wot They Dun: "The Ultimate Guide to UK Glam Rock on TV In The '70s" paperback earlier this year. His new book includes complete guides to all 619 episodes of Top Of The Pops between 1964 to 1975, hundreds of black & white screenshots of surviving footage (including ELO/The Move) as well as memories and anecdotes from over fifty artistes who performed on the show. Pete told me that readers will also find "an exclusive (and very funny) quote from Bev Bevan" within. Fans of The MoveELORoy Wood and Wizzard are very much likely to enjoy perusing the 656 pages on offer.

"TOP OF THE POPS: The Lost Years Rediscovered 1964-1975" by Peter Checksfield is available to preview/buy via these links thus:
