Sweet Talkin' Women: ELO's Ladies in Lyrics

#1,491: The use of the colour blue and the mention of rain have been familiar themes for Jeff Lynne when writing lyrics for ELO songs over the years. Inspired by a recent chat with a fellow follower, Yours Truly KJS and thought it would be interesting for ELOBF to take a look at how often female names have also turned up too in the ELO back catalogue. With hit singles by the name of "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Evil Woman" well known to avid and casual fans alike and mentions of an "ocean's daughter", a "sweet little lady" and even a "painted lady" elsewhere (not forgetting a certain Lana Wimp in the "Hold On Tight" music video), this writer has come up with the names of  seven ladies whose names are directly quoted in these Jeff Lynne penned Electric Light Orchestra songs thus ...

Nellie Takes Her Bow
Ma-Ma-Ma Belle
Oh No Not Susan
Julie Don't Live Here
"Sweet Maid Marian" (Poor Boy)
"Dear Jo" (Is It Alright)

Doubtless we have missed some and there are more if the net is widened to include Jeff's outings with The Move, The Idle Race or his solo career. And then there's Dr. Roy Wood to consider ...

Until next "Time" in the ELO (and related) Universe ... KJS ... 12-March-2019

  1. Perhaps "MANDALAY (now I wish you were here with me)" could be included here?
I propose another list of Jeff songs with the word "bird" (Bluebird, Bluebird is dead, Need Her Love, Songbird, Mandalay itself...). Cheers!
