Review: World Premiere (Starflight)

#951: Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Starflight is the musical vehicle of Sydney based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jib Khan. If Starflight's first album "Adventure Beyond" was an impressive debut, the big question, for me, was what screenplay their second release "World Premiere" would reveal to the listener.

The answer is that Jib has continued successfully piloting Starflight on their sonic adventure in the ELOBF universe and that the "World Premiere" of their latest musical landing is resplendent with the influence of ELO and, of course, The Beatles. This enjoyable release is a memorable homage to the musical craft of Jeff Lynne, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, overhung with the entertaining versatility, song craft and lyrical guile of the likeable Aussie.
Jib's vocals on this record often remind this listener of those of the late, great Kelly Groucutt with "World Premiere" a prime example, opening up (as it does) with the infectious "Stereo" - replete with vocoder and strings whilst quoting its very own "three piece harmonies" within. "Wicked Woods" - the lead single - follows with its catchy riff and diving cellos, complete with an ELOesque (if not sinister) feel to it that is a testimony to the creative juices of the writer and his love of the classic ELO sound. "When The Sun Go Down" is another great track with the vocal resemblance of Kelly G and it is followed by the wonderfully string swept, vocally magnificent and anthemic "Live The Opera".

There's a nod to ELO's "Discovery" LP with the funky floor filler "Evil Spell" - rumoured to be the second single - thumping out its seventies disco beat. "Dr. Radio" follows the same sentimental musical and lyrical themes of "Mr. Radio" and "Mr. Blue Sky", again in an imaginative and smile inducing ELOesque kinda way. There's a jazzy feel to "Cool" and a 'calypso-ska' tempo to "Take A Jet" that, when coupled with sultry ballads "Unforgettable High" and "Precious Moments", ensure that the album also retains the personality of its creator.
Starflight captain Jib Khan: Fangs for a great album!
"World Premiere" is completed by the fantastic "Blueberry Dream" - an encore that pays tribute to The Beatles"Strawberry Fields Forever""I Am The Walrus" and ELO's "Hello My Old Friend" with added orchestral overtures and sweet guitar licks. This is a cracking album that, I'm sure, will tick all the boxes for fans of ELO, Jeff LynneThe Beatles and related artistes. [9/10]
