Calling All Honest Men #2
#97: Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Once again, this morning on the way to work, Yours Truly KJS had another listen to Eric Troyer's excellent song "Honest Men" - replete with its thought provoking lyrics - and recorded, of course, by Electric Light Orchestra Part Two (Telstar #ELO100) back in 1991 reaching #60 in the Official UK Singles Chart thus:
"Where did all the heroes go? We've had our fill of this gallery of scoundrels, The leaders of the world, Those power hungry liars, Rise up and sound the sirens, Send out the searching parties, All we need is a few good men ... Throw out the tyrants, Those aged fat cats, Outlived their usefulness, They have led us to this mess, Make them answer, Hold them to their promises, And throw them in the street, If they won't tell the truth"
What struck me was the various topics covered in the song - especially these lyrics that I've cited above. The reason I say this is that with the General Election upcoming and the huge debt our nation is carrying as a result of the (so called) "credit crunch", these words are maybe even more relevant today than they were nineteen years ago. Was it really that long ago? Our Parliament is a gallery of scoundrels, our leaders are power hungry liars (especially when seeking re-election). Remember a certain 2005 election 'promise' to hold a referendum on the EU constitution a.k.a. Lisbon Treaty? They have indeed led us to this (financial) mess and ordinary folks/voters (whomever they feel led to vote for) should indeed hold them to their promises if they will not tell the truth. I do believe that it is a noble and good thing to be able to vote and a tragedy if folks don't. The days are coming when the word 'vote' may mean something entirely different in the forthcoming 'Beast' empire with debates and voting in the EU parliament already just a ninety second light flashing 'aye' or 'nay' session. Calling all "Honest Men" and women: Being able to vote freely is a hard won privilege so please make sure that you do vote, always holding your leaders to account for their promises.
Until next "Time" in the ELO (and related) Universe ... KJS ... 18-Apr-2010
